Mike Rizzo, the general manager of the Washington Nationals, has to think really fast. He needed to come up with somebody who is experienced enough and also someone who is already considered as a successful manager who is qualified to look after the Washington Nationals. This team is a very promising group of players who are all shocked by the very sudden resignation of Jim Riggleman.
Good for Mike Rizzo, since he did not have to look very far to find a manager for his team.
Davey Johnson was the best choice as the newest manager of the Nationals, since he was already familiar with all of the team’s operations, as well as the players and he is also already very close with Mike Rizzo. Johnson was also known as the one who had been advising Rizzo for two years now. So, there is already no question about it, and everything just came into place.
Davey Johnson is also very well-known as the one who led the New York Mets to the 1986 World Series title and he has also managed four very big league teams. So, if a seasoned manager is what the Nationals are looking for then they just found the perfect guy for the job. Johnson, 68 years old, is returning to a place that he is already very familiar with. The team’s official announcement just happened very recently.
The Nationals will begin an interleague series, and they will be playing against the Los Angeles Angels, and Johnson will be managing the team for the very first team, according to the management he would stay manager of the team all throughout the season.
Johnson signed a three-year consulting contract that is effective until 2013.
John McLaren, the interim manager, handled the team for the third consecutive game and finished it with a 2-1 win over the Chicago White Sox to finish his very short stint 2-1. The former bench coach of Riggleman will be tasked to some of the scouting duties just within the organization.
And with just less than an hour before the game last time, a thunderous applause could be heard from the clubhouse of the Nationals as Rizzo thanked McLaren for filling in during a time of instability.
And it was also during this time when Rizzo announced to the entire team that the management has already hired Johnson as their new manager this was actually not a secret since most of the players as well as other people knew about this thing for some time already. They were just waiting for the confirmation and the official announcement.
