During late spring Dusty Baker the Cincinnati’s manager juggled with pitching rotation moves after Johnny Cueto was placed out of play with a terrible inflammation of the shoulder and Bronson suddenly fell ill. As a result of these predicaments Edinson Volquez was chosen for the starter game come opening day. Volquez who’s in his late 20’s does not pass as a full ace but the manager thinks this player’s very ready in a junior rotation to pick the upcoming step in the direction of elite pitcher; this event is coinciding with the entire team’s efforts to prove that it can rank amongst other elites found in National League.

Baker supported his decision by appointing Volky over Arroyo who has a seven year old gap over the 27yr old.  He said the young man is capable of challenging stringent opposition. He further said that if the team’s to be equal with other N0. 1’s Volquez would have to display slow-run and shutouts game modes. Volquez did this earlier in 2008 when he allowed less that two runs in 12 out of the initial 13 starts.

However, Reds have in the recent past continued to show signs of improvement despite Edinson’ half season absence.
