Larionov, Makarov, Krutov, Fetisov & Kasatonov – The Russian Five

You do remember them, don’t you? The Russian Five. The whole 80:s in my world were dominated by the players, my own country Sweden managing to steal a gold medal in the world cup 1987 against the otherwise unbeatable Russian Five.

I still think that they impersonate Ice Hockey, these Russians, Larionov, Krutov, Makarov, Kasatonov and Fetisov. There were no faster skaters on the Ice and you could just sit there and enjoy their flawless technique. In my opinion there is no other unit of players that can even be compared. The five were the ice hockey of the 80:s.

In 1989 the unit was split up and they all moved to NHL as the Soviet Union finally opened up and let them in exchange for the promise to coma back and play for Russia in international games – they were still officers as well as hockey players.
